Why use this test
100% private
Your camera feed stays in your browser the whole time. Nothing is recorded, uploaded, or stored.
No download or sign-up
Runs instantly in your browser tab. No app, extension, or account required.
Works before any call
Check your camera before joining a Meetrix meeting, or any other video call, so you're not troubleshooting live.
How to test your webcam
- Click Start Webcam Test above.
- Allow camera access when your browser prompts you.
- Check that you can see yourself in the preview.
- If you have more than one camera, use the dropdown to switch between them.
- Click Stop Test when you're done - this releases the camera immediately.
Common webcam problems and fixes
- Camera access was blocked: click the camera icon in your browser's address bar and set it to "Allow", then reload the page.
- Black screen or no picture: another app (Zoom, Teams, or another browser tab) may already be using the camera. Close it and try again.
- No camera found: check the webcam is plugged in properly, and that it shows up in your operating system's camera settings.
- Built-in laptop camera not detected: some laptops have a physical camera privacy shutter or a function-key toggle (often Fn + a camera icon key) - make sure it isn't switched off.
- Works here but not in a specific app: that app may have its own camera permission separate from your browser's. Check its settings, or see your browser's help pages for Chrome or Firefox camera permissions.
Camera sorted? Run the mic test and the speaker test next so your audio is checked too, or run the full pre-call check to test everything, including your connection, in one pass. Presenting from a script? Try the online teleprompter to read it without looking away from this camera. Cleaning up a profile photo instead? Try the background remover. You can also browse all Meetrix features, or check the Meetrix blog for setup guides if you're self-hosting a Meetrix deployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this webcam test free?
Yes. The webcam test is free to use, requires no sign-up, and no download.
Is my video recorded or uploaded anywhere?
No. The preview uses your browser's built-in WebRTC camera API directly - the video stream stays on your device and is never sent to Meetrix or anyone else.
Why does my browser ask for camera permission?
Browsers require explicit permission before any website can access your camera. Click Allow when prompted, or check the site permissions if you accidentally blocked it.
My camera is not showing up. What can I do?
Make sure a webcam is connected and not being used by another app (like Zoom or Teams), then reload the page and try again. See the troubleshooting section above for more fixes.
Does this work on mobile phones?
Yes, it works on modern mobile browsers that support WebRTC, including recent versions of Chrome and Safari on Android and iOS.
Which browsers are supported?
Any modern browser with WebRTC support: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari (recent versions). Older browsers without getUserMedia support are not compatible.
