How to remove the background from an image

  1. Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP image above, or click to choose one.

  3. Click Remove Background. The first time you do this, your browser downloads the model - a one-time download, cached afterwards.
  4. Compare the before and after side by side.

Common background remover problems and fixes

  • The first run is slow: that's the one-time model download, not a bug. It's cached afterwards, so every later run on this device starts immediately.
  • Rough edges around hair or fine detail: a known limit of any automatic background removal model. Try the Best quality model size, or use a photo with more contrast between the subject and the background.
  • The wrong part of the image was kept or removed: a busy background or more than one clear subject can confuse the model. Crop the photo closer to the subject you actually want and try again.
  • The image is too large to process: resize it down below 4000x4000 (16 megapixels) or under 20 MB, then try again - the caps exist so the tab doesn't run out of memory compositing the result.
  • The transparent PNG shows a solid background when I open it somewhere: some apps and older image viewers don't render transparency and show white or checkered squares instead - that's the app, not a broken export. Open it in an editor that supports alpha channels to confirm.
  • It won't run in this browser: the local engine needs WebAssembly and Canvas support, and runs faster with WebGPU. Update to the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

Is this background remover free?

Yes. The local engine is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no limit on the number of images - just the per-image size cap listed above.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

Not on the free engine. Your image is decoded and processed entirely in your browser, in a background worker, and never leaves your device. The only path that uploads anything is the optional high-accuracy server engine, which discloses the upload before it runs and is not live yet.

What's the difference between the free and high-accuracy options?

The free option runs a segmentation model locally in your browser at your choice of three quality levels: no upload, no cost, but occasionally rougher edges around hair or fine detail than a larger model would produce. The high-accuracy option (coming soon) sends your image to a larger model on Meetrix's servers for cleaner results, but requires an upload and an email address.

How large can my image be?

Up to 20 MB and 16 megapixels (about 4000x4000) on the free local engine. Bigger than that risks running the browser tab low on memory while compositing the result - resize the image down first if it's larger.

Can I get a solid color background instead of transparent?

Yes. Choose white, black, or pick a custom color before running - the tool composites the cut-out subject onto that background instead of leaving it transparent.

Why are the edges rough, especially around hair?

Fine detail like individual hair strands is the hardest case for any background removal model, free or paid. Try the Best quality model size, or use a photo with better contrast between the subject and its background.

It removed the wrong thing, or kept part of the background.

The model looks for the most prominent foreground subject - a busy background, low contrast, or more than one clear subject can confuse it. Try cropping the photo closer to the subject you want and running it again.

What image formats are supported?

JPG, PNG and WebP for input. The output is always a PNG, since that's the standard format for an image with a transparent background.

Can I process more than one image at once?

Not yet - this version handles one image at a time. Run it again for each additional image.

Which browsers are supported?

Any recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Chrome and Edge can use your GPU (WebGPU) and run faster; other browsers fall back to WebAssembly, which works everywhere but is slower.
