How to test your speakers

  1. Put on your headphones or turn your speakers on, and set the volume to a comfortable level.
  2. Click Start Speaker Test above.
  3. Click Left - you should hear the tone only in your left ear or left speaker.
  4. Click Right, then Both, and check each one sounds the way you expect.
  5. Click Stop Test when you're done.

Common speaker problems and fixes

  • No sound at all: check your system volume isn't muted, and that the browser tab isn't muted (right-click the tab and choose "Unmute site"). Also check the correct output device is selected in the dropdown above.
  • Sound is coming from the wrong device: your computer may still be routing audio to a previous device. Pick the right one from the dropdown, or change the default output in your operating system's sound settings.
  • Only one side works: try a different pair of headphones or a different port. If the same side fails on both, the problem is the device or its settings, not your headphones.
  • Left and right are swapped: some USB adapters and audio interfaces reverse the channels. Check for a balance or channel-swap setting in your system sound settings.
  • Sound is distorted or crackling: lower the volume slider, close other audio apps, and try a different sample rate in your operating system's audio settings.
  • Bluetooth headphones sound muffled or thin: most systems drop to a low-quality mono profile when a microphone is active. Close any app that's using the mic, then reconnect the headphones.
  • The dropdown only shows "Default": your browser hides speaker names until you've granted microphone permission once. Use the Show device names button in the widget above.

Is this speaker test free?

Yes. The speaker test is free to use, requires no sign-up, and there is nothing to download.

Is any audio recorded or uploaded?

No. The test sound is generated in your browser using the Web Audio API and played straight to your speakers - it's never recorded, uploaded, or stored anywhere.

Why can't I see my speaker names in the dropdown?

Browsers hide device names until you've granted microphone permission once, even for output devices. Click Show device names under the dropdown to unlock them - this is optional, the test works fully without it.

I can hear the tone but not in my meeting app. What's wrong?

This test and your meeting app can use different output devices. Check the output device selected in both the dropdown above and your meeting app's audio settings, and make sure they match.

Does this work on mobile phones?

Yes, it works on modern mobile browsers that support the Web Audio API, including recent versions of Chrome and Safari on Android and iOS. On iOS, audio starts after your first tap on the page, per Apple's autoplay rules.

Which browsers are supported?

Any modern browser with Web Audio API support: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari (recent versions). Switching the output device from the dropdown needs a browser that supports the newer Audio Output Devices API - Chrome and Edge currently do; where it is not supported, the dropdown is disabled and a note explains why.

Can I test my left and right channels separately?

Yes, that is the point of the test. Use the Left, Right and Both buttons to send the tone to one side at a time and confirm each speaker or headphone side is working.
