How to calculate video call bandwidth
- Pick a video quality. Audio only, SD, HD or Full HD - whichever the call will actually run at.
- Enter how many people. Include yourself. This is what drives download bandwidth in a group call.

Common bandwidth questions and problems
- The download number looks too high for a big call: most apps cap how many video tiles they actually decode at once (this calculator caps at 25) and downscale distant participants, so real usage in a very large call is often lower than the raw math suggests.
- My upload is the bottleneck, not download: that's normal. Home connections are usually far more asymmetric than office ones - if calls are choppy on your end but fine for everyone else, upload is the first thing to check.
- Calls are fine solo but bad when someone else is on the network: your total available bandwidth is shared. A household member streaming video or uploading a large file at the same time can push a video call below what it needs.
- Screen sharing makes things worse than expected: sharing a video or anything with fast motion costs much more bandwidth than sharing static slides - if it's not necessary, sharing a still document or pausing playback while you talk helps.
- Wifi is the problem, not the internet plan: a speed test over wifi can look fine while the call itself struggles with wifi congestion, distance from the router, or interference. Try a wired connection if calls are consistently choppy.
- The numbers don't match what my app reports: every platform's own in-call statistics reflect what that specific app is doing in real time, including any quality it has already stepped down to - this calculator estimates the requirement, not a live measurement.

How much bandwidth does a video call actually use?
Roughly 0.1 Mbps for audio only, 0.5 Mbps for SD (360p), 1.5 Mbps for HD (720p), and 3 Mbps for Full HD (1080p) per video stream, in each direction. These are typical figures published by major video call platforms, not an exact number for any one app.
Does a group call use more bandwidth than a 1-on-1 call?
Your upload stays about the same either way - you're still only sending one video stream of yourself. Your download goes up with each additional participant you can see, since you're receiving a separate stream for each one.
How much bandwidth does screen sharing add?
Sharing static content like slides or a document adds relatively little - around 0.15 Mbps. Sharing a video or anything with continuous motion adds much more, often close to 1 Mbps, because there's far more changing between frames to encode.
What's the difference between upload and download here?
Upload is what you send - your own camera and, if you're presenting, your screen share. Download is what you receive - everyone else's video, and anyone else's screen share. Home internet plans are usually much faster for download than upload, so upload is the more common bottleneck in a video call.
Is 25 Mbps download enough for video calls?
For nearly any normal video call, yes - 25 Mbps covers even a large gallery-view call at HD with room to spare. Upload is far more often the limiting factor, since home connections typically offer much less of it.
Why does my call still lag even though my speed test looks fine?
A speed test measures your connection at that moment, not what's actually available during the call. Other devices streaming, uploading or downloading on the same network compete for the same bandwidth, and wifi congestion, VPNs and your router's own limits can all cause lag even when a speed test looks healthy.
Does this account for other devices using the same connection?
No - it calculates what the call itself needs. If other people or devices on your network are streaming video, gaming, or backing up files at the same time, you need extra headroom on top of this number.
How accurate are these numbers?
They're planning estimates based on typical figures video call platforms publish, not a live measurement of any specific app. Real apps adjust quality continuously based on available bandwidth, so actual usage during a real call will vary.
Do Zoom, Teams and Google Meet all use the same bandwidth?
Not exactly - each platform uses its own codec and adaptive bitrate logic, so the precise number differs slightly between them. They're close enough at each quality tier that this calculator is a reasonable estimate for any of them.
