How to run a speed, jitter and latency test

  1. Click Start Test. The test runs in three short stages - latency, download, then upload.
  2. Watch latency get measured. A handful of quick round-trips measure how long a request takes to come back, and how much that varies.
  3. Watch download speed get measured. A file streams in and the live Mbps reading updates as it arrives.
  4. Watch upload speed get measured. Data is sent out in chunks the same way, with a live Mbps reading.
  5. Read the result. See download, upload, latency and jitter together, plus a plain-language read on whether it's enough for video calls.

Common speed test problems and questions

  • The result seems too low for my plan: wifi signal, distance from the router, and other devices sharing the connection all reduce real-world speed below the advertised maximum. Try testing over a wired connection to isolate whether wifi is the issue.
  • The result seems too high or too good to be true: some ISPs and routers prioritize traffic to well-known fast networks like Cloudflare's, which can make results run a little optimistic compared to slower or more distant destinations you actually use day to day.
  • Latency looks fine but calls still lag: check jitter - inconsistent latency causes choppiness that a single low latency number won't show. Also check whether anything else on the network is uploading heavily, which mainly eats into upload capacity.
  • The test won't finish or times out: a very slow or unstable connection can cause the download or upload stage to time out before finishing. That's itself a meaningful result - it suggests the connection is struggling.
  • Results vary a lot between runs: that's normal on wifi or congested networks. Run it three or four times at different points and look at the typical result rather than any single one.
  • Upload is much lower than download: that's expected on most home internet plans, which are built around downloading far more than uploading. It matters most for how well your own video comes across to others on a call.

Is this speed test free?

Yes. It is free to use, with no sign-up and no app to install.

Does this upload my data or files?

It sends and receives disposable test data - a stream of bytes with no content - purely to measure how fast your connection is. No personal data, files, or your actual browsing traffic is involved, and none of it is kept afterward.

Is my connection tested through a Meetrix server?

No. This test talks directly to Cloudflare's global network - the same infrastructure behind their own public speed test - so Meetrix never sees or handles your test traffic at all. The page itself is served by Meetrix; the actual measurement happens browser-to-Cloudflare.

What's the difference between download and upload speed?

Download is how fast data comes to you - loading a page, receiving someone else's video in a call, streaming video. Upload is how fast data goes from you to someone else - sending your own video in a call, uploading a file. Most home connections have far more download capacity than upload.

What is latency and why does it matter?

Latency is how long it takes a small piece of data to make a round trip to a server and back, in milliseconds. High latency makes everything feel delayed - a slight lag between when you speak and when someone hears you, or between clicking something and seeing it respond - even if your download and upload speeds are both high.

What is jitter and why does it matter?

Jitter is how much your latency varies from one moment to the next, rather than the latency number itself. A connection with low but wildly inconsistent latency can cause choppier audio and video than one with a slightly higher but steady latency, because apps struggle to smooth out the timing.

What counts as a good result for video calls?

Roughly: latency under 80ms and jitter under 30ms feels smooth; download and upload above about 3 Mbps each comfortably covers HD video calls. Above 150ms latency or below about 1.5 Mbps, expect visible lag or freezing.

Why does my speed test result differ from what my ISP advertises?

Advertised speeds are a maximum under ideal conditions. Wifi signal strength, distance from your router, other devices sharing the connection, and network congestion at any point between you and the test server can all bring the real number down.

Why did my result change when I ran the test again?

Network conditions change from second to second - other traffic on your connection, congestion elsewhere on the route, even which server you happened to reach. Run it a few times at different moments for a more reliable picture than any single result.

Does this work on mobile data?

Yes - it measures whatever connection your device is currently using, wifi or mobile data.
