How to record your screen online
- Click Start Recording above.
- Optionally tick Include microphone audio first, if you want to narrate.
- In your browser's share dialog, choose your entire screen, a window, or a tab, then click Share.
- Do whatever you want to capture - the timer in the corner shows how long you've been recording.
- Click Stop Recording, or use your browser's own "Stop sharing" bar, when you're done.
- Preview the result and click Download Recording to save the .webm file to your device.
Common screen recording problems and fixes
- The share picker doesn't list a tab or window I want: some browsers only offer tab sharing for other tabs in the same browser window, not tabs from other windows or other browsers. Move the content into a tab of the same browser window and try again.
- No sound in the recording: system/tab audio capture depends on ticking the audio-sharing checkbox in your browser's own share dialog (Chrome shows this for tabs; support for full desktop audio varies by OS). Tick Include microphone audio here if you just need your voice, or check your browser's audio-sharing option for tab or system sound.
- Recording stopped without warning: closing the shared window or tab, or clicking your browser's "Stop sharing" bar, ends the recording immediately. The tool still saves whatever was captured up to that point.
- Start Recording does nothing, or the button is disabled: your browser doesn't support the Screen Capture API. Try the latest version of Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on desktop.
- Recording permission was denied: you clicked Cancel, or closed the share dialog. Click Start Recording again and pick a screen, window, or tab to share this time.
- The downloaded file won't open in an app: the recording saves as .webm. Most players and browsers open it directly; if an app specifically needs .mp4, convert it first with a tool like ffmpeg.
- File is too large to upload or send: compress it with the free video compressor, which also runs entirely in your browser - your file still never uploads.

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Recording happens entirely in your browser using the Screen Capture and MediaRecorder APIs - the video is held in your browser tab's memory, never sent to Meetrix or anyone else. It is only written to disk when you click Download Recording, and that save happens locally on your own device.

Why does my browser ask what to share?
This is your browser's built-in screen-sharing permission prompt, the same one video call apps use. Choose your entire screen, a specific window, or a single browser tab, then click Share to start recording.
Can I record with sound?
Yes, two ways. If your browser supports it and you tick "Share tab audio" (or similar) in the share dialog, system/tab audio is captured. Check Include microphone audio before starting to also narrate over the recording - the tool mixes both into one audio track.
Can I record just a window or a browser tab instead of my whole screen?
Yes. When you click Start Recording, your browser's share picker lets you choose Entire screen, a specific Window, or a single Chrome Tab. Pick whichever scope makes sense for what you're recording.
Does this work on Mac and Windows?
Yes, on any recent desktop browser on macOS, Windows, or Linux that supports the Screen Capture API: Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Safari on macOS supports it in recent versions too.
Does this work on mobile phones?
Generally no. Screen recording from a web page relies on the Screen Capture API, which iOS Safari and most Android mobile browsers do not support. Use your phone's built-in screen recorder (in Control Center on iOS, or Quick Settings on Android) instead, then use the video compressor here if the file is too big to share.
What file format does the recording save as?
A .webm video file (VP8/VP9 with Opus audio), the format the browser's MediaRecorder API produces natively. WebM plays in every modern browser and in players like VLC; convert it to MP4 with a tool like ffmpeg if a specific app needs that format.
Is there a time or file size limit?
No hard limit is enforced by the tool, but the recording is held in your browser tab's memory while you record, so a very long capture can use a lot of RAM. For long recordings, stop and download every 20 to 30 minutes rather than running one continuous multi-hour capture.
Why did my recording stop by itself?
Either you (or an accidental click) hit your browser's own "Stop sharing" bar - which sits at the top of the shared screen or tab - or the shared window/tab was closed. Either one ends the recording immediately and the tool saves whatever was captured up to that point.
Which browsers are supported?
Any modern desktop browser with getDisplayMedia support: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and recent Safari. The tool detects support automatically and shows a clear message instead of a broken button if your browser can't do it.
Can I edit the recording afterward?
Not in this tool - it only records and downloads. Once you have the .webm file, trim or edit it in any video editor that accepts WebM, or convert it to MP4 first with ffmpeg for wider editor support.
