Common MP4 to MP3 conversion problems

  • "Couldn't read an audio track" error: the file either has no audio track at all (a silent screen recording, for example) or uses a codec your browser can't decode, such as a DRM-protected download. Try a different file or a different browser.
  • Conversion is slow, or the tab feels stuck: long videos take longer to decode and encode. Check the progress bar - it should keep moving. For very long recordings, trimming the video first will speed things up a lot.
  • Nothing happens after clicking Convert: make sure you actually selected a file first, and that your browser supports the Web Audio API (see the FAQ below for supported browsers).
  • The MP3 has no title or artist showing in my music player: this converter doesn't add ID3 metadata tags. The file plays fine everywhere, it just won't show a title until you tag it with a separate tool.
  • Only one language track came through on a dubbed video: browsers decode the video's default audio track. If your file has multiple audio tracks (different languages, commentary), there currently isn't a way to pick a different one in this tool.
  • The browser tab crashed or ran out of memory: this most often happens with very long files (well over an hour) on a phone or a low-memory computer. Try a shorter clip, or use a desktop browser.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The file you choose is read directly by your browser. Decoding the audio track and encoding it to MP3 both happen locally on your device - nothing is sent to Meetrix or anyone else, at any point.

Does this only work with MP4 files?

MP4 is the main use case, but this converter works with any video or audio format your browser itself can decode, including MOV, WebM and M4A. If your browser can play it, this tool can usually pull the audio out of it.

Why do I get an error saying it "couldn't read an audio track"?

This means your browser could not decode audio from the file. The most common causes are a video with no audio track at all (a silent screen recording, for example), or an unusual or DRM-protected codec your browser does not support. Try a different file, or a different browser.

What MP3 quality (bitrate) should I choose?

192 kbps is a solid default for speech and most music. Use 128 kbps for smaller files when quality matters less, or 320 kbps for the highest quality, at the cost of a larger file.

Is there a file size or length limit?

There's no hard file size limit, but very large or very long files (roughly over 3 hours) are blocked because converting that much audio entirely in your browser's memory can crash the tab. For anything shorter than that, a heads-up appears for large files but conversion still proceeds normally.

Can I convert more than one file at once?

Does this work on mobile phones?

Yes, on modern mobile browsers that support the Web Audio API, including recent Chrome and Safari on Android and iOS. Large videos use more memory on a phone than a desktop, so very long clips may be slower or fail on older devices.

Which browsers are supported?

Any modern browser with Web Audio API and Web Worker support: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari (recent versions).

Does the converted MP3 have a title or artist tag?

No. The output is a plain MP3 audio stream with no ID3 metadata tags attached. It plays normally everywhere, it just won't show a title or artist in a music player until you add tags yourself with another tool.

Does converting to MP3 change or damage my original video?

No. Your original file is only read, never modified. The converter produces a brand new MP3 file alongside it - your video is untouched.
