Common problems when converting VTT to SRT
- Not sure what actually differs: the cue text and timing stay the same - SRT just doesn't support VTT's cue settings or inline styling, which are dropped on conversion.
- The VTT file won't load: a missing
WEBVTTheader isn't fatal, and NOTE/STYLE/REGION blocks are skipped automatically - check the import report for anything that couldn't be parsed. - Need to fix timing, not just convert: use the full subtitle editor - shift, scale, sync to a point and find-and-replace all work here too.
Need to go the other way? Use the SRT to VTT converter. For ASS/SSA files, see ASS to SRT, or use the full subtitle editor for anything more involved, including syncing subtitles to your video. You can also browse all Meetrix features.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this VTT to SRT converter free?
Yes, free to use with no sign-up and nothing to install.
Is my VTT file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and converted entirely in your browser and is never sent anywhere.
Will I lose anything converting VTT to SRT?
SRT has no equivalent for VTT's cue settings (position, alignment) or inline styling tags - those are stripped, leaving plain text and timing. Most players don't rely on them anyway.
Can I fix subtitle timing before converting?
Yes - this is a full editor, not just a format swap. Use Shift or Scale to fix sync issues, or edit any line directly, before you export to SRT.
My VTT file has WEBVTT NOTE or STYLE blocks - will those cause a problem?
No, they are recognized and skipped automatically during import; only the actual cues are converted.
Does this work on mobile phones?
Yes for opening a file and converting it. Timing edits are much easier with a keyboard, so we recommend desktop for detailed fixes.
