How to convert ASS to SRT
- Click Open subtitle file and choose your .ass or .ssa file.
- Check the validation panel for anything worth fixing before you convert.
- Set the Format dropdown at the bottom to SRT.
- Click Download to save an .srt file, or Copy to clipboard to paste it elsewhere.
Common problems when converting ASS to SRT
- Styling is lost when converting from ASS: this is expected - ASS/SSA supports fonts, colours, positioning and animation that SRT simply cannot represent. Only the plain text and timing carry over.
- The ASS file won't load: check it has a real
[Events]section with aFormat:line - the import report names the exact line that failed if something looks wrong. - Text with commas looks cut off: ASS dialogue lines use commas as field separators, and this can trip up naive converters. This tool correctly rejoins any commas that belong to the actual subtitle text.
- Need to fix timing, not just convert: use the full subtitle editor - shift, scale, sync to a point and find-and-replace all work here too.
For SRT/VTT conversions, see SRT to VTT and VTT to SRT, or use the full subtitle editor for anything more involved, including syncing subtitles to your video. You can also browse all Meetrix features.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this ASS to SRT converter free?
Yes, free to use with no sign-up and nothing to install.
Is my ASS file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and converted entirely in your browser and is never sent anywhere.
Will I lose the styling and positioning from my ASS file?
Yes for the SRT output - SRT is plain text with timing only, so fonts, colours, positioning and animation from ASS/SSA have no way to carry over. If you need to keep them, export back to ASS instead of SRT from the format dropdown.
Does this also support SSA, not just ASS?
Yes, both use the same [Events] structure and are read the same way.
Can I fix subtitle timing before converting?
Yes - this is a full editor, not just a format swap. Use Shift or Scale to fix sync issues, or edit any line directly, before you export to SRT.
Does this work on mobile phones?
Yes for opening a file and converting it. Timing edits are much easier with a keyboard, so we recommend desktop for detailed fixes.
