How to trim a video

Common video trimming problems and fixes
- The start point isn't exact: lossless trimming snaps to the nearest keyframe at or before your chosen start, usually within a second. This trades a little precision for zero quality loss and a fast result - the same tradeoff professional stream-copy tools make.
- The file won't load: this tool only reads MP4 and MOV files with H.264 or H.265 video - a different container (WebM, AVI, MKV) or an unusual codec will be rejected with a clear message rather than fail silently.
- The trimmed video has no sound: this happens only with an unusual audio codec this tool can't copy without re-encoding - the result screen tells you if that happened. Standard AAC audio, which covers almost every MP4, is always preserved.
- I need to remove a section from the middle, not the start or end: trim it in two passes - once for the part before the section you want removed, once for the part after - since one pass only keeps a single continuous range.
- The file is too large to load: trim a shorter section elsewhere first, or try a device with more available memory - the practical ceiling depends on how much RAM your browser tab can use.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. This trimmer runs entirely in your browser - your file is read, cut and reassembled on your own device, and never sent anywhere.
Does trimming reduce the quality of my video?
No. This tool cuts losslessly - it copies the existing video and audio data for the section you keep rather than decoding and re-encoding it, so there is no quality loss and no re-compression, unlike editing tools that re-render the whole clip.
Why does the trim start a fraction of a second before where I dragged the handle?
A compressed video can only start playing from a "keyframe" - a fully self-contained frame, spaced every second or so through the file. Lossless trimming has to start at one of these, so the cut snaps to the nearest keyframe at or before your chosen start point. This is standard behavior for any lossless trim tool, including professional ones - trading a fraction of a second of precision for zero quality loss and near-instant processing.
Is there a file size limit?
This tool warns above 500 MB and refuses files above 2 GB, since a browser tab can run out of memory on very large videos. Trim a shorter section from a larger file elsewhere first if you hit that limit.
Will this add a watermark?
No. There is no watermark, no sign-up, and no limit on how many videos you trim.
What formats are supported?
Input is MP4 or MOV with H.264 or H.265 video. The output is always MP4. WebM, AVI and MKV aren't supported yet.
Which browsers are supported?
Any modern browser - Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari. Unlike some of the other tools on this site, trimming doesn't need the newer WebCodecs API, so browser support here is broader.
What happens to the audio?
It's copied exactly, the same lossless way as the video, for the vast majority of files (anything with standard AAC audio, which covers nearly every MP4 you'll run into). In the rare case a file uses an unusual audio codec this tool can't copy without re-encoding, the trimmed video is silent and the result screen says so.
Can I cancel a trim in progress?
Yes, though trimming is usually fast enough that you may not need to - it's a copy operation, not a re-encode.
Can I trim out the middle of a video and keep both ends?
Not in one pass - this tool cuts one continuous start-to-end range. Trim twice (once for each part you want to keep) if you need to remove a section from the middle.
